Music Prediction Experiment

A bird will instruct you to remember and recall a sequence of melody notes.

Study Information

Please read the following information carefully. Your participation in this research is voluntary. It is your choice whether to participate or not. Please do not hesitate to write to us at hanqi[dot]zhou[at]uni-tuebingen[dot]de if you have any further questions regarding the study.

1. Purpose

This is a sequence learning game where you need to remember a sequence of symbols (e.g., music notes), recall them and predict new ones. Note that you DO NOT have to have headphones or audio equipments to participate. Every sequence will be shown visually. To be eligible to participate, you MUST meet the following criteria:

You can read and understand English fluently.
You have not previously participated in this experiment.

2. Procedure

This study will take about 30 minutes. It will consist of the following steps:

You will be introduced to the game, and you will get to try it out.
We will check whether you have correctly understood the game by asking you some questions.
You will play the game and try to earn the bonus!
You will complete a short questionnaire after the experiment.

3. Compensation

You will receive £4.00 for your participation. You will also receive a bonus payment of up to £4.00 based on your performance in the experiment.

4. Data protection

Once we have awarded you your bonus payment, your Prolific ID will be deleted from the study data. The experiment data will be stored under a randomly assigned participant number on a server at the University of Tübingen. This means that it will become impossible to link the study data to you. All data collected during this study will be treated confidentially and all individuals with access to your personal data are obliged to maintain data secrecy. We are not responsible for the handling of your personal data through the Prolific platform.
The study data may also be made publicly accessible via research databases or scientific publications (typically via the internet). This makes it possible for other researchers to check or replicate the results and enhances the quality of scientific research. The study data may also be used for new research questions going beyond the purposes of this particular study. The data is stored anonymously, treated confidentially, and used only for scientific purposes. You are free to withdraw, in which case recorded data will not be used (cf. point 6).

5. Voluntary participation

Your participation in this research is entirely voluntary. There will be no repercussions when canceling your participation.

6. Right to refuse or withdraw

You do not have to take part in this study if you do not wish to do so. You are free to withdraw your consent and do not need to provide a reason for your withdrawal. Participants who drop out of the study for any reason (e.g., technical issues) are eligible for full or partial compensation. Please contact aswath.chandrasekaran@student.uni-tuebingen.de and include a screenshot of the experiment website if possible. If you withdraw from the study before data collection is completed, your data will not be used. If you withdraw from the study after completing the study, but before bonus payments have been processed, you can request the deletion of your data. After the processing of bonus payments, your Prolific ID will be removed from the study data and it will be fully anonymized, making it not possible to link you with your data.

7. Risks

Your participation does not involve any physical or emotional risk to you. You are free to withdraw at any time.

You are a young bird in a vibrant, musical forest, eager to learn the enchanting songs of your community. Your bird teachers will guide you in learning the songs of the various birds species in your area.

But don’t worry—you won’t need sound to play; the magic is all in the visuals! Can you rise to the top and become the ultimate chirp champion?

A bird will provide a recap of the song you learned in the previous phase.
Then, without any you will have to reproduce it as accurate as possible.

Phase 3 Example: Completion

How does it work:

This phase is like a bonus round, and is only provided at the end of each melody
You will try to decide how to complete the melody given a specific number of notes

Make your completion fit in with the rest of the melody as much as possible

Your bonus in this phase is calculated using the similarity of your composed melody with the true melody.
On the next page you will try out an example.

Experiment Summary

Each bird will teach you one song, and each song will be split into 5 parts.
In the learning phase, you will press the note shown by the bird and get feedback.
In the memory phase, you will recap the song you learned, and then recall it.
By the end of each song, in the completion phase, you will complete the song.
Overall, you will pay attention to the song patterns and respond to each phase accurately.

1. What is CORRECT about the game goal?

The goal of the experiment is to remember and reproduce the songs when listening to them. Each of 3 phases, 5 parts in all 5 melodies counts for the bonus. You should finish the tasks by paying attention to melody patterns.

2. What is CORRECT about the the three phases?

In learning phase, you have to try to predict next note until you get it correct. In the memory phase, your speed matters to the bonus. In completion phase, you will try to predict the following part based on what you have learned.
